The whole section surrounding Grandpa's death was butchered from horrible voice acting from Grandpa, the music abruptly cutting out instead of a fade when he passes which makes the scene look comical. These issues really manifest during the game's more emotional scenes. While there was more of an effort put in to make the cutscenes more dynamic, there's way more cuts instead of long, continuous shots. Everything seems to robotic and lifeless, compared to how expressive and full of personality the original had. The overall animation during cutscenes is also a step down. These designs were clearly made for the PS1, and characters like Ghadius, Huepow, and Lephise look so bad I can't take them seriously. The character models did not translate very well. Wasn't very fond of Huepow's voice either. Joka and Ghadius' voices don't fit their characters nearly as well (especially Joka), and the language overall sounds way more repetitive than it did in the original. The new recordings overall are a massive step down. It makes it seem like Klonoa's Japanese VA was too busy to record enough lines, so they severely downplayed Klonoa's involvement, which is lame as hell. Every conversation with NPC's seems to have Huepow do all the talking, then say "Let's go Klonoa", and he'll say "Wahoo (Right!)". Klonoa barely says more than 4 words at a time, and most of his lines are voice clips that get reused over and over. It makes it seem like Huepow is the main character, cuz he's doing all the talking. I have NO IDEA why they went ahead and changed the script to the extent they did. I didn't even bother with the English version, so this is my impression based on the re-recorded Phantamilian version. My biggest problem with this remake is the presentation, and script. I had a lot of trouble trying to be precise in my platforming, but that's probably just because I'm so used to the original. Other than that, playing the game was fine. Klonoa's movement feels way more slippery than the original, and his flutter seems to not last as long, and while the wind bullet has a longer range, it feels like it has a smaller hit box. On a gameplay level, I think it's mostly fine. (Skip to the end of you don't wanna hear my issues with the Wii version, and just wanna hear my concerns for the new one, I want to hear people's thoughts on that more than anything) This has me kind of concerned for the new remake. I recognise it's pretty unfair to expect anything on the level of the original game, but there were so many odd decisions and lackluster recreations. It seems like the new one is an updated version of the Wii version, so I thought it would be best to know what it was like. I just finished playing through the Wii remake for the first time, in preparation for the new remake.
